What are Muscle Cars?

“Muscle car” is actually a term used to describe a wide variety of powerful, high-performance vehicles. While some people have definite opinions about what qualifies as a muscle car and what doesn’t, the term usually applies to two-door, rear-wheel-drive, small to midsize cars with large, powerful eight-valve (V8) engines.

Classic Car

You may even dream of one day driving one of those sleek, high-performance automobiles that can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a matter of seconds. If so, you’ve got your sights set on a muscle car.

Why do People Love Muscle Cars?

Muscle cars are associated with high performance and sleekness.

Many muscle car enthusiasts believe it has a relatively light body, giving them a lot of power and speed. These speedy muscle cars could travel in excess of 120 miles per hour, which made them popular as informal drag racers. Some cars could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than 8 seconds hence the love for it.

What Separates Muscle Cars From Other Vehicles?

Auto manufacturers began to design their muscle cars in the 1970s. In response to complaints by Ralph Nader and others who wanted auto manufacturers to focus more on safety, the automotive insurance industry began to charge more for insurance on muscle cars.

At the same time, gas prices began to rise, and efforts were underway to fight air pollution as Auto manufacturers were concentrating more of their efforts on lowering horsepower, increasing luxury, improving fuel economy, and reducing emissions.

Muscle cars are traditionally defined by their raw power, usually courtesy of a large V8 engine, and also by a two-door format and rear-wheel drive. Also, affordability. Muscle cars were made for the common blue-collar worker, giving the average American a chance to hit the streets with speed and style.

The earliest muscle cars were not particularly fuel-efficient or environmentally friendly. Of course, fuel was cheaper in the 1960s. Science had not yet revealed the environmental impacts of vehicles at that time.

Any differences aside, the major difference between sport and luxury cars and muscle cars mostly boils down to affordability. While a Mustang or Challenger is usually within the grasp of the average consumer, a Mercedes-Benz or Jaguar likely isn’t. However, if we take affordability off the table, a whole slate of new cars that obviously have muscle car inspiration can enter the fold.

Basically, that means that some cars traditionally thought to belong in other classes may qualify. Many of these vehicles can be classified as luxury cars from certain viewpoints, but the fact remains that they are blending muscle and sports car DNA to push performance further and further.
