Is the 2015 Chevy Silverado Pickup a Good Used Vehicle?

By Mike Richards Posted: 10/19/2017

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is one of the most popular full-size pickups out there with extreme performance and power, along with many convenient features to round it out. The 2015 model is primarily known for having a quiet ride and an interior that is very comfortable.

What makes the Silverado different from the competition is that it has many configurations available. It has body designs of crew, cab, and double-cab, and some great package options. Of course, with a used truck, you aren’t going to be configuring things yourself, but you are likely to find many different options among the various vehicles for sale.

The 2015 1500 is also known for advanced towing power, being capable of nearly anything and everything that is thrown its way. It’s honestly a vehicle that has quality but also offers up hundreds of thousands of miles of dependability.

New in 2015

When compared to 2014, the 2015 model offers trims with a 6.2-liter engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle was widely overhauled in 2014 with better materials and an improved fuel efficiency, so those come to the table, as well. Also in this year, the former 2WT Work Truck trim has been changed to be called the LS.

Excellent Reasons to Buy a 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500

Many great features make the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a truck to consider. We’ll go over some of the most significant ones so you can determine if this pickup fits your needs.

  • Safety Ratings. The 2015 Silverado has a perfect score when it comes to overall collision protection. It also garnered five stars on front and side impact collision OnStar is a standard option in all but the LS trim, and most high-level trim options come with an optional safety package that nets you driver alerts and a rearview camera.
  • Superb Interior. It wasn’t long ago when interiors on pickups lacked a lot of the features found in crossovers. Thankfully, that’s not the case here. The interior is well-designed with high-quality materials. You’ll find cup holders, bins, and storage slots everywhere, but still find yourself in a very roomy and comfortable cab. Also, the seats have great padding for long trips, and most trim levels have bench or bucket seats. Higher level trim packages even include five USB ports.
  • Power and Performance. The standard engine on most trim levels is a 4.3-liter V6 with 285 horsepower. You’ll also find the fuel efficiency estimate at 24 mpg on the highway, which is certainly reasonable. Also available is a 5.3-liter V8, which comes standard on the LTZ version. In addition, a 6.2-liter V8 is available on some packages with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft. of torque to work with.
  • Cab Designs. There are three different cab configurations, with varying levels of roominess. The cab model is the smallest while the extended cab gives you more storage space. The crew cab offers a 6.5 foot or 5.7-foot bed. The regular cab has a long 8.2-foot bed, with a shorter 6.5-foot bed available as a smaller size option.
  • Towing Ability. Very few competitors can tow over three tons, but this baby can handle up to 7,600 pounds. When you look at the 8-speed transmission and the 6.2-liter engine, that number goes all the way up to 12,000 pounds, which is impressive for any pickup on the market.

Reasons You May Not Want a 2015 Silverado 1500

There are a few things that are not quite as perfect as the above list might lead you to believe. We’ll look at a number of these, as well, to give you a better idea of what you’re considering purchasing.

  • Acceleration while Towing. This model is not the best when it comes to towing large loads and accelerating quickly. You may experience hesitation and even deceleration depending on what you’re towing and how the roads are.
  • Expensive 8-Speed. If you want the eight-speed, you’ll be paying quite a bit more. If you want that better acceleration, you need to be aware that this is the model you need and it is a price jump.

This pickup offers everything you would expect, as it is has proven itself over the years. It has impressive features and has evolved to provide many additions more often seen in SUVs and luxury cars. If you plan to tow anything around, you can do far worse than the 2015 Silverado 1500.
