Japanese car manufacturing giant Toyota has a few entries in the sedan category that rank very highly among U.S. customers. However, while the compact sedan Corolla is often knocked for its underpowered engines and a design that is nothing to write home about, Toyota’s larger sedan, the Camry, tops the charts in the midsize sedan segment.

According to US news, currently the Toyota Camry has a score of 9.0 out of 10 which is based on our evaluation of 46 pieces of research and data elements using various sources.

The Camry is a fan favorite and one of the top selling sedans in the United States. It is praised for its safety, reliability, spacious cabin and excellent fuel economy. The name Camry was added to Toyota’s line in 1982 initially as an entry to the compact sedan segment, but it grew over the years. Since its introduction, we have seen eight Camry models hit the global market.

If you are looking to buy a brand new Toyota Camry, you will be looking at a car that has netted all the accolades and is one of the top selling sedans in the United States. For the latest model, Toyota has upped the power output of its engines that goes from 203 to 300 horsepower across the range. The front-wheel driven vehicle contains Toyota’s renowned safety features and reliability while providing its passengers with enough room and pleasant driving experience. On the downside, the car has a boot that is smaller than many of its competitors.

U.S. News awarded the new model with its 2018 Best Midsize Car for the Money and its 2018 Best Midsize Car for Families.

But what if you are not in the market for a new Toyota Camry, but you’d rather go for a used model? What is it that you are getting, and what is it that you will miss out on, compared to the brand new model? What should you look for when searching for a used Camry?

First, you will undoubtedly make huge savings by buying a used Camry, depending on the model year you choose. But you will miss out on Camry’s new design and the updated safety features that come as standard, as well as the more powerful engines.

2014 Camry for as low $7000

If you roll back the years and look for a 2014 model, you might get it for as little as $7000, depending on the trim and condition, but it can go up above the $21,000 mark as well. For comparison, the 2018 model has a base price of $26,000.

However, as the buyer’s choice, the 2014 Camry offers plenty for your buck. Yes, you are opting for an older design, but you can get one with extra features that are still included in the newer models and even save a load of cash.

But if you go even further back, and look at a model from 2007-2008, you will probably be able to find a nice comfy family sedan that can still do a decent job in carrying around a family of four or five. However, adults might find the rear seat a bit cramped.

According to the CarGurus’ listings, the 2007-2008 models can be purchased for as low as $2,000 and up to about $14,000 on the top end.

However, looking at the CarComplaints data, the 2007 model has seen the most complaints. However, the complaint resource notes that the 2009 model is the one to avoid. Both models suffer from higher oil consumption, but the 2009 model is said to have higher repair costs.

Looking for a Camry?

If you are looking for a Camry that will provide you with reliability, comfort, and space in the cabin and the trunk, you might be interested in the 2011 model. However, the safety ratings of that year are not up to par with other Camry models. Toyota took cues from its customers, and critics and completely refreshed the design for the year 2012 and added some features like Bluetooth phone connectivity that comes in handy even now.

The Best Option?

But if you would like to get as close to the new model as possible, while saving some cash on the purchase, take a look at the 2015 model. A new redesign with more aggressive lines and more powerful engines makes the car look fresh even now. Toyota opted to upgrade the brakes and suspension giving it a more sporty ride without actually compromising quality. Passengers will still feel comfortable and experience a quiet and relaxing ride. Depending on the mileage, the car’s condition and selected options, you might be able to find a good 2015 Toyota Camry for as low a price as $14,000 and up to around $20,000. On top of all that, this model has some updated infotainment features and improved safety.

Toyota Corolla

The major gripe all the critics have with the Toyota Camry, similar to its smaller sister, the Corolla, is the fact that the interiors are bit bland when compared to the competition. Also, critics feel that the ride is a bit behind that of its competitors. However, considering all the relevant factors, the Camry still tops many of the charts, and it has become one of the best ranked midsize sedans in years.
