Buying a motorcycle can be very expensive, and it might not be in your budget to buy something brand new. The price of many used motorcycles can be too high as well. What are you to do? You do not want to give up on the idea of getting out on the open road on a bike, but you don’t want to spend a fortune. A good option is to consider a salvage auction motorcycles. They have some great benefits.

Why Choose a Motorcycle (Moto) Salvage Auction

As mentioned, the price is the main reason to consider a motorcycle salvage auction (for example Copart California, etc). It’s possible to find a number of bikes for very low prices. However, some have salvage titles, which means that you will not be able to drive them on the road, register them, and get insurance until you have them rebuilt.

In some cases, a vehicle may be declared “non repairable”, which means that even with repairs it will always carry a salvage title with it. Still, it is often possible to find bikes that are still in a repairable state, and you can get them for a fraction of the price of a new or used vehicle.

You can find a number of different types of auctions including police, government, and other public auctions. Dealer auctions could be an option as well, but you will need to work with a third party dealer so you can access the auction inventory and bid. Many of the companies will take care of the bidding for you. You can set your maximum bid amount, and then they will take care of the bidding so you do not have to worry about it.

Choosing the Right Bike

When you are choosing a bike from a motorcycle salvage auction, you need to pay close attention to its history. How much damage and what type of damage does it have? Will buying the bike and making the repairs of every current dent to it still mean a savings for you? You should look for bikes that need relatively few repairs, and those that may only have cosmetic damage.

Something else to consider when choosing from a motorcycle salvage auction is the rarity of the motorcycle. While it can certainly be tempting to bid on a very rare bike when the price is low, you have to think about the rebuilding process. Not only will those parts tend to cost more, but those parts tend to be rare as well. It could take a long time for you or your mechanic to locate the items needed to repair the bike.

Take the time to look at all of the different options in the motorcycle salvage auction. Some of the most popular bikes you are likely to find include Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda, but that’s just the start. You can find all sorts of bikes, even Harley-Davidson sometimes, that are up for auction. As long as you take the time to consider the condition of the bike and how easy it will be to find the parts for repairs, it should not be an issue.

Making the Repairs

You may be able to do some of the repairs on your own, but it’s generally best to work with a garage or mechanic that is experienced in rebuilding. In some states, it’s required for builders to have a rebuilding license in order to get the bike in order. Always check the laws in your state before you buy from a motorcycle salvage auction and try to repair it on your own.

When you take the time to understand the auction process, and the types of bikes available, it’s easier to make a good decision when buying through a motorcycle salvage auction.
